What makes touch controls not terrible

What makes touch controls not terrible

July 17, 2026 · Marek Dvořák

Playing a game with your thumbs on glass is awkward by default. The games that overcome it do a few specific things, and once you notice them you start spotting the lazy ones instantly.

Big, well-spaced buttons matter more than fancy graphics. If your thumb covers half the action, nothing else will save the experience. The best games keep important controls near the edges where your hands already rest.

Letting players choose a control scheme is huge. Tilt, buttons, swipe, or a mix, people have strong preferences, and forcing one on everyone guarantees frustration for half your audience.

When we review something, control feel is one of the first things we test. A great idea buried under clumsy inputs still scores low here, because on a phone the controls are the whole bridge between you and the game.
